Advice when Moving House in Australia

You said “ I’ll never move again” Well talk about déjà vu: the furniture removalists are booked for tomorrow. There is now no turning back; but what measures can be taken to ensure a relaxing, stress-free, perhaps even enjoyable removal?

The main point is, though it is now probably too late, you should have chosen a decent furniture removalist. Always use an AFRA member. AFRA is the Australian Furniture Removers Association. To become an AFRA member removalist companies must reach the required standard in areas such as staff training, correct insurance policies, correct equipment, suitable premises, secure storage facilities and a competent trading record. All AFRA members will carry the correct public liability and additionally only AFRA members are legally entitled to offer full insurance for goods in transit and storage.

Packing and being well organised are vital. The more packed-up ready to go and organised a household is then the easier and quicker the removal will be. Whenever budget restraints allow, ask the removalist to do the full pre-pack the day before. The removal company will have experts trained in household pre-packing; be it fragile items such as delicate statues, or simply the kids rumpus room, the removalist can take this chore away from you. Packing is however rather expensive. A full pre-pack can double the cost of a removal. These days most people want to pack their own goods, which is fine as long as you have the time and a few certain rules are followed. For example, if you are going to do the pre pack then make sure you do it; don’t leave half the packing for the removalists to do on arrival. Most removalist will be happy to do the pre pack, but only if they are ready for it. If there a lot of packing to be done on the morning of the removal then the household move will not work well. Do not pack boxes too heavy. The rule of thumb is can you pick them up yourself? Pack books in the smaller ‘book’ boxes. These smaller boxes are also fine for either heavy garage tools and for the more delicate items such as Champaign flutes or china. Use the larger boxes for the bigger lighter items such as linen, clothing, toys, saucepans and lampshades. (A more detailed packing description will follow in a later article)

When packing your own goods start early. Buy the boxes at least a month before the removal. Remember the saying “if in doubt chuck it out” so get rid of all that junk stored under the house. This particularly applies if moving interstate or moving into storage.

So the removal day is finally here, you are all packed up, well organised, got the kids off early- you are ready to go. Where is the removalist? You call them but all you get is a switched off mobile phone; the new owners are due to move in and midday. You say to yourself “why didn’t I call to confirm yesterday. Perhaps I should have used the AFRA Removalist; they really were not that much extra”
